Soft Enamel Pin
Hard Enamel Pin
UV Printed Pin
When customizing pins, have you ever been told, “This design can’t be done in soft enamel”
Today, we will clearly explain the mainstream coloring methods and help you understand which designs work for soft enamel and hard enamel, and which ones require UV printing.
Soft enamel lapel pins and hard enamel lapel pins follow a similar production principle: Both involve filling the recessed areas of a metal mold with color (paint or glaze).
Color is filled manually or by an intelligent coloring machine, then cured at high temperature. The metal texture remains strong, and color layers appear distinct.

Filled with enamel glaze and fired at high temperature (one color, one firing), then polished flat.
The surface becomes smooth and glossy, with rich, translucent color.

Colors must be separated by raised metal lines to prevent paint from flowing and mixing.
UV ink is directly sprayed onto the metal surface and instantly cured by ultraviolet light.
Whether flat or embossed, UV printing can achieve gradient color with photo-level details - virtually any visual design.

Noticeable Thickness: Paint or glaze fills recessed areas, creating a substantial and embedded feel.
Rich, Solid Colors: Tones appear deep and weighty.
Distinct Touch:
Hard Enamel: Smooth and mirror-like.
Soft Enamel: Raised metal edges with recessed color areas.
High Durability: High-temperature curing ensures long-lasting color stability.

Thin Ink Layer: Lacks the “embedded in metal” thickness.
Accurate Color Reproduction: Supports any color, gradients, and high-detail graphics.
Strong Visual Impact: Layered printing can create a 3D visual effect.
Visible Coating Feel: The ink film is perceptible, less glass-like compared to hard enamel.
Simply Put: Soft/Hard enamel is “Craftsmanship.”
UV Printing is “Precision Machinery”

Suitable for Hard Enamel/Soft Enamel:
Clearly defines color blocks ≥ (0.3mm)
Metal lines separating colors ≥ (0.2mm)
Text size 6pt or larger
Moderate number of colors, no gradients
Designs that pursue dimension and handcrafted texture
Not Suitable for Soft Enamel/Hard Enamel:
Gradient colors (single-color filling cannot blend)
Photo-level graphics (manual/machine filling lacks ultra-fine precision)
Extremely small text (cannot be engraved or filled)
Ultra-thin lines (metal cannot achieve hairline thickness)
Extremely tiny color areas (too small for paint filling)
Any design can be done with UV printing.
The only question is whether your design can be made with enamel, not whether UV can do it.
For projects that require texture without losing original design details, a combination of UV printing and enamel coloring is often the best solution.
With gradients becoming more popular, UV printing is widely used.
Spray painting can also achieve gradients, but it requires extremely advanced technical expertise - something only a few badge manufacturers can truly deliver.
When executed well, the texture surpasses UV printing.
