Soft enamel pins are one of the most common types of custom pins. They are made by stamping metal to create recessed areas and then filling those areas with colored enamel.

The metal lines remain raised while the enamel colors sit slightly lower, creating a textured surface with a clear dimensional effect. Soft enamel pins are known for their vibrant colors, detailed designs, and affordable pricing, making them a popular choice for promotional pins, event souvenirs, and fan merchandise.

Hard enamel pins are produced by filling enamel into recessed metal areas and then polishing the surface until the enamel and metal lines are perfectly level.

This process creates a smooth and flat surface with a refined and polished appearance. Hard enamel pins are highly durable and resistant to scratches, giving them a premium look similar to jewelry.

Because of their high-end finish, hard enamel pins are often used for corporate gifts, commemorative coins, and premium brand pins.

Printed pins, also known as UV printed pins, are created by printing the design directly onto the metal surface using UV printing technology.

Unlike enamel pins, printed pins do not have raised or recessed metal lines. Instead, they allow complex artwork, gradients, and photo-quality images to be reproduced accurately.

Printed pins are ideal for designs with fine details, multiple colors, or gradient effects that cannot be easily achieved with traditional enamel processes.

Soft enamel, hard enamel, and printed pins differ mainly in surface texture, durability, and design capability.

• Soft enamel pins have raised metal lines and recessed color areas, creating a textured look with vibrant colors. They are affordable and widely used for promotional purposes.

• Hard enamel pins have a completely smooth surface because the enamel is polished flush with the metal lines. They offer a more premium and durable finish.

• Printed pins use UV printing to place the design directly on the metal surface, allowing complex images, gradients, and photo details that enamel pins cannot achieve.

Choosing the right option depends on your design style, budget, and the level of detail required.

What Are Challenge Coins?

Challenge coins are custom-manufactured medallions that originated in the military but are now used across various organizations. They hold significant personal, historical, and symbolic meaning for many individuals.

Meaning of Challenge Coins

• Military Tradition: Challenge coins have a rich history dating back to World War I. They became widespread in the military over the decades, often given as recognition for a job well done or to honor a member's service.
"Challenge coins are an old military tradition, dating back to WWI, becoming popular during Vietnam, and growing widespread in the military over recent decades."

• Symbol of Achievement: Challenge coins are awarded for specific achievements or services, and they are highly coveted. They are often gifted, traded, and proudly displayed by recipients.
"These coins are custom-manufactured medallions given for specific achievements or service, and they are highly coveted, traded, and displayed."

• Membership and Bar Challenges: Historically, challenge coins were used to prove membership in a group. A member could be challenged to show their coin, and if they couldn’t, they might have to buy drinks for the group.
"It's called a 'challenge coin' because a culture developed around them. If someone doesn’t have their coin, they buy drinks for the group."

• Personal and Sentimental Value: Many challenge coins hold sentimental value, tracking an individual's career or commemorating milestones.
"For me, being in the military, they hold sentimental value because they track my career and achievements."

Value of Challenge Coins

• Inherent Value: Challenge coins don’t have inherent value based on their metal content since most are not made from precious metals. Their worth often depends on the sentimental or collector's value.
"Challenge coins don’t have inherent value; their worth depends on how much people are willing to pay."

• Collector's Value: Certain challenge coins can be valuable to collectors, especially rare ones or those associated with significant events or figures.
"There is definitely a market for them, some people like to collect them."

• Market Value: The market value of challenge coins varies widely. Some are inexpensive, while others—especially those with historical significance—can be worth much more.
"The value of challenge coins can range widely. Some may cost only a few dollars, while others with historical significance or rarity may be worth much more."

• Rarity and Significance: The value of a challenge coin can be influenced by its rarity and the significance of the person or event it represents.
"Some challenge coins are serial-numbered, and in some cases, only one coin remains after a mission, making them very rare."

Manufacturing and Design of Challenge Coins

• Custom Manufacturing: Challenge coins are often custom-made to commemorate specific events, achievements, or organizations.
"We offer custom challenge coins that commemorate specific events and achievements, providing a truly unique token."

• Design Assistance: Manufacturers typically offer design assistance to help create unique and meaningful challenge coins, ensuring your vision is perfectly executed.
"Our team can help refine your design to bring your vision to life, ensuring the final product meets your expectations."

Collecting and Trading Challenge Coins

• Collecting Practices: Many people collect challenge coins, often trading or receiving them from various organizations or events.
"Collecting challenge coins is similar to collecting law enforcement or fire service patches. Many people enjoy trading and adding to their collection."

• Display and Preservation: Challenge coins are often displayed in racks or cases, allowing collectors to showcase their collection.
"Display your collection in a coin rack or case to keep them safe and proudly show off your achievements."

• Trading and Market: There is a growing market for trading and selling challenge coins, especially rare or historically significant coins.
"Challenge coins, particularly rare ones, are highly sought after by collectors, and there's a strong market for trading them."

Challenge coins are not just physical tokens; they represent achievement, membership, and personal history. While their market value can vary, their sentimental and historical value often makes them priceless to their owners. Whether you're commemorating a personal achievement, honoring service, or building a collection, challenge coins are symbols that last a lifetime.

The edge of a challenge coin is a small detail that can greatly influence its overall appearance. Choosing the right edge style can enhance the design, add texture, and make the coin feel more premium.

Here are six common edge options used for custom challenge coins:

1. Standard Edge

The standard edge is a smooth, flat edge without additional decoration.
It offers a clean and simple look and is usually included at no extra cost. This option works well for minimal designs or budget-friendly projects.

2. Rope Edge

The rope edge features a braided pattern that looks like twisted rope.
It symbolizes strength, unity, and teamwork, which is why it is often used on military and naval challenge coins.

3. Cross Cut Edge (Diamond Cut)

The cross cut edge uses intersecting cuts that create a diamond-like pattern around the coin.
This design reflects more light, making the coin appear shiny and premium. It is commonly paired with gold plating finishes.

4. Spur Edge

The spur edge includes raised metal points forming curved recesses around the coin.
This unique style creates a dynamic, starburst-like effect and pairs well with coins that feature 3D designs.

5. Oblique Line Edge

The oblique line edge consists of diagonal polished lines running around the border.
It adds subtle texture and shine, making it one of the most popular edge upgrades for custom challenge coins.

6. Bezel Edge

The bezel edge is formed by a series of wave-like ridges around the coin.
Each ridge reflects light differently, giving the coin a classic and elegant appearance.

How to Choose the Right Edge?

When selecting an edge style, consider:

• Design style – simple designs work well with standard edges, while detailed designs benefit from decorative edges

• Visual impact – cross cut or bezel edges provide stronger reflections

• Theme – rope edges are ideal for military or nautical themes

• Budget – some decorative edges require an additional cost

Decorative edges can significantly enhance the look and feel of a challenge coin, helping it stand out as a memorable collectible or award.

When designing custom challenge coins, the choice of metal is crucial as it impacts the overall look, feel, and cost. Here are some of the most commonly used metals and their characteristics:

• Copper: Copper is ideal for making 2D challenge coins or designs with minimal depth. Copper coins are typically made using stamping techniques, which result in beautiful embossed designs. While the 3D effect may not be as pronounced as in zinc alloy, copper still offers fine detail and a solid feel. Additionally, copper coins can be enhanced with plating to improve shine and durability.

• Iron: Iron challenge coins are a cost-effective choice, typically used for simpler 2D designs. Iron coins are made using stamping methods, which produce clear and crisp embossed details. While their 3D effects may not have the same depth as zinc alloy, they still feature fine, detailed embossing and are great for more basic designs.

Zinc Alloy: Zinc alloy is often the go-to choice for 3D challenge coins due to its high malleability. The die-casting process allows for intricate and deep 3D effects, making it perfect for creating detailed and highly dimensional designs. Zinc alloy is commonly used for military challenge coins, commemorative coins, and other designs that require high-definition 3D effects

Ultimately, the choice of material depends on your design goals and budget. Zinc alloy is best for detailed 3D challenge coins, while copper and iron are great options for 2D designs or simpler embossed patterns. We'll work with you to select the ideal material that matches your vision and requirements.

For custom keychains, 1.5 inches is the most commonly recommended size. 1.75 inches and 2 inches are also popular choices, offering slightly more space for design details. If your design includes many elements or fine details, a larger size such as 2.25 inches can improve overall visibility and clarity.

For the key ring, a diameter of about 1 inch is generally considered the most practical and comfortable for everyday use.

Our standard minimum order quantity (MOQ) is 100 pieces per design.

Whether you need a small batch or a large order, we are happy to help. However, for better cost efficiency, we generally recommend ordering at least 50 keychains, as very small quantities may have a higher unit price.

If your order quantity is below 50 pieces, you are still welcome to contact us. Our team will help find the most suitable solution based on your design and production requirements.
